Produced shortly before the outbreak of World War I forced Steichen to leave Europe, Heavy Roses, Voulangis, is unquestionably one of his most celebrated and important images. While Steichen, an avid gardener, would continue to photograph flowers throughout his career, none of these images would be as expressive as Heavy Roses, Voulangis, which he later called an omen of the war to come.
As of this writing, only three early prints of this image have been located. These are: two palladium prints, one at The Museum of Modern Art, the other in a private collection; and a toned gelatin silver print offered at Christie's New York, 15 May 1980 (Lot 36). A handful of prints of this image, printed by Rolf Petersen in the 1960s, have also appeared at auction.
