signed lower right E. KOLLIER. Ao1662 The present previously unpublished panel, is one of the earliest known works by Collier joining a select group of paintings, all vanitas still lifes, dated from 1662. During this period he was working in Leiden, where there was a well-established tradition of still life painting, with a marked bias towards the depiction of vanitas subjects. Collier was born in Breda, and although it is not known who his teacher was, he probably received his training in Haarlem, where he was influenced by Pieter Claesz before settling in Leiden in circa 1662. Four other works dated by Collier to 1662 are known: one in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (no. A3471), one in the Metropolitan Museum (no. 14398), one sold at Sotheby's, London, December 17, 1998, lot 39 and one sold by Christie's, New York, May 25, 1999, lot 10, which although considerably larger and more elaborate, includes many of the same elements as the present composition suggesting they were painted in close succession using the same props and set up in the same studio space. It is interesting to note that these early works are all signed Kollier and it was not until his move to London in the 1690s that he began to sign his works Collier.
