Edmund C. Coates
American, 1816-1871
Anient Italy - Ovid Banished From Rome, 1867
Signed E.C. Coates, dated 1867 and inscribed F...Turner (ll)
Oil on canvas laid to panel
Oval, 42 x 54 inches (106.7 x 137.2 cm)
This piece is based on J.M.W. Turner's composition of the same name, which he exhibited at London's Royal Academy of Art in 1838 alongside Modern Italy - The Pifferari. Though Coates certainly reworked the foreground and added dense foliage on either side of the scene, his rendition of the architecture and overall organization of the picture is fairly faithful to the original. Edmund Coates was particularly fond of Turner and made numerous copies and variations of the great master's work.
