Description: Vanessa Bell writing oil on canvas 20 x 153/4 in. (50.8 x 40 cm.) Painted circa 1916 PROVENANCE The artist to private collection, 1975; by whom sold to the present owner. NOTES 'An oil sketch of Vanessa Bell of circa 1916 painted over an earlier portrait (upside down) of an unidentified man' (R. Shone, private correspondence, 2001). A fine group of portraits of Vanessa from the 1916-1918 period exist including Vanessa Bell (1917-18; National Portrait Gallery, London), and Vanessa Bell Pregnant from autumn 1918, which was discovered on the reverse of a later painting A Corner of the Crown Inn, King's Lynn, and sold in these Rooms, 6 March 1992, lot 64 (Mackelvie Trust Collection, Auckland Art Gallery, Tio o Tamaki).
