Description:
The barn at Charleston
signed 'D Grant' (on the reverse)
oil on canvas
25 x 30 1/4 in. (63.5 x 76.7 cm.)
Painted circa 1944.
Notes:
In September 1916 Vanessa Bell took a lease on Charleston farmhouse, and from then on the house was to provide a home for many people. Initially it was to allow Duncan Grant and David 'Bunny' Garnett to do farm work as they were conscientious objectors to compulsory military service. All the artists painted the local views many times, the barn, which is still there, being a favourite subject. A similar view by Grant The Barn by the Pond, 1925, is in the collection of the City of Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums.
No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis
