Description: DR. DAVID MERRITT PAPERS - Medical Papers and Correspondence of Dr. David Merritt of 2042 Bainbridge Street, Philadelphia, Pa, including a detailed reminiscence of his work during the Civil War establishing the Ambulance Service and developing what would now be known as a triage system for the wounded, and very colorfully illustrated records of his work as a doctor in Philadelphia after the war, mostly in Obstetrics, so, records of births, etc. Many letters to and from his father by the same name in New Brunswick, Canada. Merritt served as Surgeon in Chief for the 1st Brigade of the 1st Division, 1st US Army Corps. One letter is his reconciliation with his father after 16 years, written from camp in May of 1865, overlooking the White House where he had just called on the President with his newborn son. Especially of interest: 1) 20pp - History of the 55th regt., PA Vols, March 12, 1877, 2) 12pp - Letter to father from Hilton Head SC., Feb 9, 1862, 3) 46pp - Letter to father from Camp Stoneman, D.C.., March 15, 1865. All in remarkably good condition.
