DISNEY 'DANCE OF THE HOURS' WATCH BY CARTIER In platinum and diamonds, ca. 1940. The pin in the form of an elephant tusk above a rectangular lapel-watch which suspends two dancing diamond pave elephants with ruby eyes. J. Schulz, Swiss, 17 jeweled movement. Signed on pin and face. 25.1 gs. 2 5/8''. Starting in 1934 and continuing through the 1940's, Cartier produced commissioned gems for Walt Disney based on characters from cartoon and animated features. In Disney's 1940 feature 'Fantasia', Ponchielli's ballet 'Dance of the Hours' is performed to comic effect by some not so graceful animals, including a troop of elephants. It is a subtle and captivating pun in that this gem is a timepiece.
