Manufactured in 1880, this particular rifle is a Second Model 1876 with the dust cover rail secured to the top of the receiver with two screws. The top barrel flat is marked " WINCHESTER'S - REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN, CT. / KING'S IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29, 1866, OCTOBER 16, 1860" ahead of the rear sight and "CAL. 45-60" at the breech. The bottom of the cartridge elevator is marked "45-60" and the serial number is marked directly behind the lever latch on the lower tang. Globe front sight and adjustable semi buck horn sporting rear sight. The upper tang is marked with the early "MODEL 1876." without the foliate at each end. Mounted with checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with an iron forend cap and crescent buttplate with compartment and cleaning rod. Underneath the buttstock, the tang is stamped "XXX" and assembly marked "1154". (The buttstock is also correspondingly marked "1154") The aforementioned marks denote the quality of the walnut used, (XXX) which is next to the highest quality of (XXXX) wood. The accompanying factory letter verifies the serial number, rifle configuration, caliber, octagon barrel, plain trigger checkered pistol grip stock, sporting rear sight, casehardened receiver and that it was received in and shipped out of the warehouse on December 18, 1880. (The 28 inch barrel is standard, so no mention of barrel length).
