Glossary of Terms

The terms and statements in the glossary are qualified statements and are made subject to the provisions of the conditions of sale.

Dimensions are given height before width in centimetres followed by inches in parenthesis. Pictures are framed unless otherwise stated.

Thomas Gainsborough
In our opinion a work by the artist. When the artist's forenames are not known, a series of asterisks precede the surname with or without initials.

Attributed to Thomas Gainsborough
In our opinion a work by the artist, in whole or in part.

Studio of Thomas Gainsborough
In our opinion a work executed by an unknown hand in the studio of the artist, possibly under his supervision.

Circle of Thomas Gainsborough
In our opinion a work by an unknown hand associated with the named artist.

Follower of Thomas Gainsborough
In our opinion a work executed in the artist's style by a contemporary or nearly contemporary painter.

Manner of Thomas Gainsborough
In our opinion a work executed in the style of the artist and probably of a later date.

After Thomas Gainsborough
In our opinion a copy of a known work of the artist and of any date.

Signed, Dated
In our opinion the work has been signed/dated by the artist.

Inscribed
In our opinion may or may not be in the artist's hand.

Bears Signature

Measurements
Furniture measurements: Height, width, depth. Diameter: unless specified, means outside diameter.
Metric measurement: Centimeters and grams rounded to the nearest 1/10.

The standard size used in U.S. theatres.

Two-Sheet
60 H x 40 H in.
Usually printed on heavier stock paper and unfolded.

'30 x 40'
40 H x 30 W in.
Same as above.

Three-Sheet
81 H x 41 W in.
Stock paper printed on three separate sheets and pasted directly on walls. As a result, very few survive.

Six-Sheet
81 H x 81 W in.
Stock paper printed on six separate sheets and pasted directly on walls. Also quite rare.

Half-Sheet
22 H x 28 W in.

Insert
36 H x 14 H in.

Window Card
22 H x 14 W in. or 18 H x 14 W in.

Jumbo Window Card

Glossary of Condition

Condition 'A'- Very fine to near mint.

Larger posters feature rich colours and clear definition. If backed with linen and/or conservation paper there may be nominal restoration at the folds or the immediate fold areas. Lobby cards, inserts and half-sheets are typically unrestored but may have corner pinholes or negligible tears at the margin.

Condition 'B' - Very good to fine.

Larger posters feature above average colour and clarity. If backed there may be some minor restoration past the folded areas and negligible paper loss. Small posters and lobby cards may have slightly more noticeable pinholes and small tears, and generally look less pristine.

Condition 'C' - Fair to good.

Larger posters feature average quality colour and clarity, often with restoration to the artwork and noticeable paper loss. Lobby cards may have more apparent border damage and look slightly more used. Small posters may have pronounced border and/or fold damage.
