Notes: The present work is a study for the left-hand section of the painting of the same title in the collection of the Tate Gallery, London and demonstrates an admirable fluidity of handling in the rendering of an ostensibly topographical image. The concentration on using his rooftop vantage points to capture the architectural structure of his subjects is not, as is discussed above, actually so far removed from his previous abstract work, and in the more freely executed studies, such as this, we see Bomberg bringing in a form of notational rendering of the buildings that carries resonances of the simplified interiors and figures of the immediately pre-WWI period.
