Notes: Property from the Samuel B. and Marion W. Lawrence Collection

Our passion for collecting American art grew out of Marion's and my enthusiasm for wildlife, the West, and breeding and showing dogs. These interests were initially manifested in the early 1940s by my collecting of prints by wildlife artists, and then later moving on to acquiring original works by these same artists. I was interested in images that depicted the grandeur of the landscape and wildlife, and the romance and history of the West.

I first began seriously collecting about twenty years ago. In time, collecting became a joint activity for Marion and me, and our taste has evolved together over a period of time. With our consistent interest in representational art, we learned more about the history of American art and have sought to represent other significant artists and movements in our collection including examples by many of the New York realists and American Impressionist painters.

For us, collecting is a very personal endeavor. We only choose works that we like and that we can envision living with. Our taste has developed with continual exposure, reading, and researching. We study the art market, attend art fairs, exhibitions, and auctions around the country, and we have developed relationships with art dealers, other collectors, and museum professionals that have ultimately helped to inform our choices.

The artists' interpretations of American life, both realist and impressionist, have enriched our perception in assessing the quality and truth of each work of art. The serious collector learns by simply pursuing this undertaking with great zeal.

We have found this endeavor to be immensely rewarding and have experienced great joy in the search, discovery and acquisition of each picture in the collection. As we have gained enjoyment from these works, we now delight in sharing them with you.
