Daniel Spoerri (1930 Galati/Rumänien- lebt und arbeitet in Seggiano). Palette Angelika Högerl. 1989 Object .108 x 307 cm (42,5 x 120,8 in). Provenienz: Private collection Switzerland. Ausstellung: Daniel Spoerri. Künstlerpaletten, Galerie Littmann Basel/Galerie Beaubourg Paris 1989/1990, cat. no. 17 (with illustration on pp. 66/67). Daniel Isaac Feinstein, son of a missionary man of the Norwegian Lutheran church, flees with his mother and his siblings to Zurich in 1942, his mother takes on her maiden name again. In Zurich he gets to know Max Terpis, Jean Tinguely and Eva Aeppli. Spoerri's way to art takes him through dancing. As of 1949 he begins training at the School of Theater Dance in Zurich, he goes to Paris on a scholarship in 1952, and is engaged as a dancer for the Bern Municipal Theatre in 1954. During this time he becomes friends with the artists Dieter Roth, Bernhard Luginbühl, Claus Bremer, Andre Thomkins and Meret Oppenheim. Spoeri gradually turns away from dancing as of 1956, he returns to Paris and gets to know, among others, Pol Bury, Jesus-Rafael Soto, Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray. His 'Fallenbilder' (Trap Pictures) make for his artistic breakthrough in 1960, at that time he is a member of the 'Nouveaux Réalistes' in Paris and also signs the group's manifesto. Spoerri, like so many other artists from his generation, pleas for a unity of art and life, his happenings, such as banquets, show his contact with the Fluxus movement. He works as a poet, stage designer, director, publisher, object artist, eat-artist, film maker and professor. In 1977 he is called to the Cologne University of Applied Art and Design and teaches at the Munich Art Academy from 1983 to 1989. Afterwards he turns to his own art again. Scattered tools, bolts, glue, boards and sandpaper are proof of an avid process of creation and are conserved in a blink of an eye. The occurrences are captured in exactly the same situation as they were found and are mounted to a coincidental backing. Everything is captured just the way it is, nothing is changed, everything can be a 'Trap Picture' and everybody is able to pick a situation for a 'Trap Picture'. It is just the level of interpretation that changes, by making the result the image. Spoerri published a sort of manual for his 'Trap Pictures' under the title 'Le developpement du tableau-piège' in 1966. Spoerri begins to set up his sculpture garden 'Hic terminus haeret-Il Giardino di Daniel Spoerri' in Seggiano in Italy in 1990/91, it is acknowledged as a foundation by the Italian ministry of culture in 1997 and is officially opened. Spoerri becomes honorary citizen of Seggiano in2005. Spoerri's remarkable and versatile aeuvre is proof of his concept of art as a form of communication and makes him one of the most important international artists. [SM]. In very good condition.
