Zu den reizvollsten Stillleben aus dem Frühwerk von Cuno Amiet zählt das vorliegende Werk. Es ist ein eindrückliches Zeugnis für Amiets frühen Kolorismus. 1907 stellte Amiet bedeutende Gemälde mit den ~Brücke"-Malern in der Galerie Richter in Dresden aus, darunter mag auch das vorliegende Bild vertreten gewesen sein, denn es strahlt den Geist der ~Brücke" dieser Zeitspanne mit der Dynamisierung der Binnenstruktur und den pastosen Farbzügen vortrefflich aus. Durch den frei gesetzten Pinselduktus und durch die klar definierten ~cloisonnistischen" Umrisslinien verweist unser Stillleben ferner auf die intensive Auseinandersetzung mit dem Schaffen von Vincent van Gogh. Mit dem raffinierten Spiel von Farbkontrasten und spannungsvollen Wechseln zwischen streng parallel geführten Pinselstrichen, netzartig aufgetragenen Farbzügen und frei fliessender Farbe zählt dieses Stillleben zusammen mit dem Blumenstillleben auf farbigem Tuch von 1908 (Brücke-Museum, Berlin) (siehe unten) zu den Hauptwerken aus Amiets Zeit des Experimentierens und des Synthetisierens.

This still-life painting is one of Cuno Amiet's most charming earlier works of art. It is an impressionable early example of his art as a colourist. In 1907, together with the Brücke-Painters, Amiet exhibited outstanding paintings in the Gallery Richter, Dresden. This picture was possibly among those exhibits which ingeniously radiated the spirit of the Brücke at this period, the inner part becoming dynamic by applying thick paint. Furthermore the freely administered brush strokes and the clearly defined 'cloisonné' lines show the strong analytical influence of Vincent van Gogh's works. The sophisticated contrast of colours, the exciting exchange of severe parallel strokes, a network of coloured lines and freely flowing paint make this picture one of Amiet's greatest works. This masterpiece as well as the (Blumenstillleben auf farbigem Tuch) 'Still Life of Flowers on Coloured Cloth' of 1908 (Brücke-Museum, Berlin) (see left) is also one of Amiet's most important works of art during his time of experimenting and synthesizing.
