LAKE BEAUPORT signed; titled on a facsimile of the reverse prior to relining oil on canvas 30.5 by 46 cm. 12 by 18 1/4 in. Lake Beauport, north of Quebec City, was a location often visited by Krieghoff after 1854. He went with his friends to picnic at its famous "Picnic Rock" or sometimes just to paint the scenery in a romantic fashion, as if it were at a time and place long past. "The Rock", according to Harper, "...was the focal point of these trips, an enormous flat boulder overlooking the lake onto which the more venturesome gentlemen climbed...their timid lady companions watched safely from the ground". Krieghoff has included himself as the artist sitting under the tree painting the vista before him.
