Bega was a student of Adriaen Ostade. Like his teacher, he described the rural life of taverns with humorous roguishness. His delicately nuanced flesh tones often show an underlying reddish touch, such as in the face of the peasant sitting at the right. Also the subtle greyish hues in the present painting are typical of Bega.
