Fishing boats in a rough sea black chalk, pen and brown ink, pen and brown ink framing lines, watermark Basel crozier in a crowned coat-of-arms with initials NCHM 6 x 10 in. (152 x 253 mm.) PROVENANCE C.R. Rudolf (L. 2811b); Sotheby's London, 21 May 1963, lot 44 (as Hendrick Vroom). LITERATURE G.S. Keyes, 'Cornelis Claesz. van Wieringen', Oud Holland, 1979, pp. 30 and 35, no. 39, fig. 33 (mistakenly listed as in Munich, Staatlische Graphische Sammlung). EXHIBITION London, The Arts Council, Old Master Drawings from the Collection of C.R. Rudolf, 1962, no. 21 (as Hendrick Vroom). NOTES One of a number of similar marine drawings in the museums in Vienna, Cambridge, Leiden, Florence and Frankfurt, and in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, reproduced in G.S. Keyes, op. cit., nos. 16-8, 30, 37, 46, 61, figs. 28-35. George Keyes notes that 'these drawings propound [van Wieringen's] most advanced concept of marine art..... He has succeeded in expressing the vast energy of nature.' Keyes dates the series to the period after 1613 on the basis of comparison to the drawings related to a series of prints by Claes Jansz. Visscher (Holl. 327-340) which were published that year. Van Wieringen, a follower of Hendrick Vroom, may have been a pupil of Hendrick Goltzius. He was later influenced by Jan Porcellis.
