Condition: The canvas has been relined. Overall with fine craquelure and slight surface soiling. Scattered minor frame abrasion along the perimter. Faint stretcher bar marks are visible along the perimeter. A small point of surface pigment loss at c.l. An uneven milky-green varnish is visible under UV examination with scattered areas of restoration, most notably along the left perimeter, overall.

A copy of a letter accompanying this painting identifies both the sitter and the artist and dates to work to 1869. Written by Adeline Stromberg, Washinton''s step-daughter, it relates that according to family history Brumidi was staying with William''s grandparents in New York and painted members of the family to pay for his board.
