Anon. sale; Christie's, May 29, 1953, lot 106 (125 gns. to Richter) Andre Watteau, Paris (1972) When Constant Troyon died in 1865, his reputation as one of the finest animal painters of the 19th century was firmly established. However, it is in such paintings as "Clairiere dans la Foret" that he may also be classified as a major landscape painter in the tradition of his Barbizon colleagues, Theodore Rousseau and Narcisse Virgile Diaz de la Pena. One may also sense the influence of Jean Francois Millet in our picture. Like Millet, Troyon keenly observed the life of the peasant that provided endless subjects for all of the Barbizon painters. Here, two milkmaids have taken advantage of a glorious summer day to rest by a quiet pool under rays of warm sunshine filtering through the trees. In the distance, cows graze under the shade of the giant oaks of the forest. The large scale of the painting suggests that it was an important work in Troyon's oeuvre. This painting may be Troyon's Salon entry of 1842.
