NOTE
Born in Sèvres, Troyon owed his artistic training to his godfather who was curator of the Porcelain manufactory museum. There, he was taught to paint on porcelain while pursuing studies in landscape painting and drawing. In the early 1920s he met Camille Roqueplan who introduced him to Diaz de la Peña in 1824. Along with Diaz and Rousseau, Troyon was one of the early initiators of the Barbizon movement.
Following a trip to Holland in 1847, Troyon began to introduce animals into his landscapes, inspired by the Dutch seventeenth-century masters Potter and Cuyp. In La Rentrée du troupeau Troyon masterfully blends the principles of plein airisme with the compositional elements and scale of the Dutch animaliers.
