AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ("CLIVE") TO SIR GEORGE COLEBROOK, CHAIRMAN OF THE EAST INDIA COMPANY,
observing that Colebrook will not be surprised that Clive receives "numerous Applications for Appointment, through you, in the Company's service", and assuring him that "I am cautious of hoping much from you, and shall always, as far as I can, avoid swelling your List, confident at the same time, that when I am under the necessity of troubling you with Recommendations, you will readily oblige me"; asking for the nomination of several positions among those going out to India "this season"; reminding Colebrook of "the Expediency of taking some of the free merchants into the Company's service", and recommending two merchants ("...Messrs Motte and Murdie..."); and requesting the promotion of William Wynne, who had been "Assistant to Mr [Henry] Strachey all the time of my Government, and conducted himself with uncommon Diligence and Ability"; together with another letter from Clive to Colebrook "reminding him of his Application in favor of Messrs Moodie & Motte, and also of settling the Rank of Mr Wynne"; 4 pages, one integral address leaf, 4to, 15 July and 4 October 1769, some creasing and small tear on first letter not affecting text, seal tear on second letter
NOTE
This letter was written two years after Clive's return from his final sojourn in India as Governor of Bengal. As this letter illustrates, Clive remained closely involved in Indian affairs and retained considerable influence within the East India Company.
