Condition/Details: Bound in pictorial wrappers with bright color illustrations to covers, this antique volume is a scarce early Christmas story by Clement C. Moore (1779 -1863), U.S. scholar remembered for this well-known poem, which begins " 'Twas the night before Christmas." Moore co-founded General Theological Seminary and taught Oriental and Greek literature there (1821 - 50). He is said to have composed "A Visit to St. Nicholas" to amuse his children on Christmas 1822, and it was published anonymously in the Troy (N.Y.) Sentinel, on Dec. 23, 1823.
The work contains illustrations by Scattergood. The volume shows external age/wear, with both outside corners of rear cover chipped away. Front and rear covers are taped together. Title page is almost entirely detached (with top corner still attached to binding). Binding is splitting from top. Previous owner's name is visible at top of front cover. The book measures approximately 8" x 9 3/4" and contains 6 unnumbered pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50
