"Oldest House in New Bedford". Signed and dated lower left "Clarence E. Braley 1917". Inscribed on back of stretcher "Clarence E. Braley 1917 New Bedford Mass - The Northeast Corner of Union and Bethel St". Also inscribed in another hand "The oldest house in New Bedford". The scene is believed to depict the current Johnny Cake Hill area near the New Bedford Whaling Musuem.
