This U.S. Contract Henry lever action rifle was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company in 1864. The New Haven Arms Co., manufactured approximately 800 Henry Rifles under an Ordnance Department contract issued on December 30, 1863. These U.S. contract Henry Rifles were in the 3000-4000 serial number range and purchased for issue to the 1st District of Columbia Cavalry Regiment. The 1st D.C. Cavalry was raised to combat Confederate partisan rangers operating near Washington D.C. In the spring of 1864, the 1st D.C. Cavalry was dispatched to the Virginia peninsula where the regiment saw heavy combat and eventually merged with the 1st Maine Cavalry Regiment. Many of the 800 contract and 300 commercial Henry Rifles issued to the 1st D.C./1st Maine Cavalry were subsequently captured by the Confederate Army. Some of the captured Henry Rifles were carried by Jefferson Davis' bodyguard when he fled from Richmond, Virginia, in April 1865. The 800 Henry Rifles issued to the 1st D.C. Cavalry were the only Ordnance inspected Henry Rifles issued by the U.S. Army. This rifle has the typical features associated with U.S. contract Henry Rifles that include: (1) serial number in the 3000-4000 range, (2) early style buttplate with rounded heel, (3) brass frame no rear sight dovetail, (4) stock and barrel with no provision for sling swivel or sling ring, (5) Ordnance "C.G.C." inspection marks on the right barrel flat adjacent to the receiver and (6) "H" Henry inspection mark on the right side of the barrel and receiver. The rifle has the later production loading lever with spur and lever latch. It has the standard pattern folding leaf sight graduated to 900 yards on the barrel dove-tail. The top of the barrel flat is marked "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS.CO. NEWHAVEN.CT." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The initials of Ordnance Sub-Inspector Charles G. Chapman ("C.G.C.") are stamped on the right side of the barrel flat. "H" New Haven Arms sub-inspection marks are stamped below the "C.G.C." inspection mark on the barrel and on the right side of the receiver immediately behind the barrel. The serial number, "3667", is located on the top barrel flat behind the rear sight and the receiver and also stamped on the inside of the stock, left side of lower receiver tang, and the buttplate. The assembly number "326" is marked on the magazine sleeve.
