Circle of Robert Peake (1551-1626) "Portrait of Lady wearing pearl ear-rings and a rough lace collar on a jeweled Dress with lace cuffs, probably Mary Sidney," O.O.P., with inscription on gilt cushion plate mounted to frame, reads as follows: "Underneath the Marble Hearse, Lies the subject of all verse, Sydney's sister, Pembroke's Mother, Death ere thou hast slain another wise and fair, and good as she, time shall throw a dart at thee'. 33" x 27" (84cms x 69cms). Note: Mary Sidney Herbert was, as per the inscription on this painting, the sister of Sir Phillip Sidney, who dedicated his famous work, The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia to her; a work that was later finished by herself due to the untimely death of her brother. In 1577, at the age of sixteen, she wed Henry Herbert, the second Earl of Pembroke, and was later mother to William, Earl of Pembroke. (1)
