Description:
signed with the artist's monogrammed initials CEB and dated 1959, l.r. watercolor and charcoal on paper mounted on board Throughout his career, Charles Burchfield was subject to periodic bouts of listlessness and depression during which he found it almost impossible to paint. His artistic output sank from fourteen finished paintings in 1957 to only six in 1958, but jumped to 33 in 1959 as Burchfield experienced a great burst of inspiration that resulted in a steady stream of new works. The title of the present painting is taken from a popular hymn, reflecting the artist's close association of nature with religion. Throughout his life, the natural world remained the artist's deepest spiritual resource. In his later paintings in particular, Burchfield sought to convey the hand of the divine creator as revealed in the mystical beauty of unspoiled nature.
Provenance:
Frank K.M. Rehn Galleries, New York Acquired by the present owner from the above, circa 1960s
