1854-1926 le petit port signed oil on canvas 46 by 55 cm., 18B by 21K in. Painted in 1907. Angrand belonged to the circle of artists who gravitated around Seurat and Signac in Paris during the 1880s, and in 1884 was one of the founding members of the Societe des Artistes Independants. He formed a particularly close friendship with Seurat, with whom he was one of the first Pointillistes, and the two artists often worked alongside each other, painting the same views. In 1896 Angrand left Paris for his native Pays de Caux, where he lived an isolated existence, completely withdrawn from his active engagement in Parisian artistic circles. Whilst the present work retains elements of Pointillisme, it reflects the artist's distancing from all official movements, and a development of a more free personal style. In using wider brush-strokes and bolder patches of colour, Angrand abandoned the scientifically based divisionist technique for a more expressive, spontaneous and liberated style. The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Pierre Angrand, the artist's nephew.
