Calcutta (Samuel Bourne): View of Calcutta near Sealdah
Photographer: possibly Samuel Bourne (1834 - 1912). View of Calcutta near Sealdah. Circa 1867. Albumen print. 21 x 28 cm. Mounted to board, annotated in ink and pencil below the image on the mount.
A rare view of the old part of Calcutta where one of the largest and busiest train stations (Sealdah Railway Station) in India now stands. The area was destroyed by floods in 1868 and the fact that Samuel Bourne was working in Calcutta in 1867 makes him the likely maker of this photograph. - Slight soiling in upper corners, traces of light surface abrasion, otherwise in very good condition and with strong contrasts.
