CATALOGUE NOTE
Schwitters had become famous in his native Hanover as one of the founder members of the Dada movement. When he was forced out of Germany by the National Socialist regime in 1937, he went first to Norway and then to Britain, choosing to settle in Ambleside in the Lake District after the Second World War. Although the majority of the local population were bemused by Schwitters' work, he remained true to his Dada roots, appropriating a panoply of found objects, scraps of paper and discarded materials to create his abstract collages. This pared down example of Schwitters' mature oeuvre, dating from 1947, emcompasses elements of a poster as well as found objects.
