Im Livre de raison ist dieses Gemälde beschrieben als Premier soleil, effet de matin, dans le fond tours emergeant des arbres, au 1r plan maison très eclairée, lumière rasante, ombres fortes, au milieu bois de pins.

Das vorliegende Gemälde zeigt einen landschaftlichen Ausschnitt von Villeneuve-Loubet, einer Gegend in den Hügeln des südfranzösischen Hinterlandes - zwischen Nizza und Antibes nur wenige Kilometer von Cagnes entfernt. In Cagnes pflegte Vallotton jeweils die Wintermonate zu verbringen. Im Hintergrund ist das Schloss von Villeneuve-Vence mit dem weissen Turm zu erkennen. Vallotton war ein Meister in der Erzeugung von atmosphärischen Stimmungen, von Licht- und Schatteneffekten. In den 20er Jahre entstanden herausragende Landschaften von Südfrankreich, die sich heute im Besitz von bedeutenden Museen oder Sammlungen befinden wie das Gemälde ~La fenêtre" (1920) in der Stiftung Sammlung Emile Georg Bührle, Zürich, ~Vue cavalière de la Cagne" (als Depositum der Gottfried Keller-Stiftung), (1921) im Musée cantonale des Beaux-Arts, Lausanne, und ~Paysage de Cagnes" (1921) im Musée des Beaux-Arts, Rouen, sowie ~Le Baou" (Vallée de la Cagne), (1922) im Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (siehe unten). Das vorliegende Gemälde zählt zu den schönsten und eindrücklichsten seiner Art.

This painting depicts a countrified part of Villeneuve-Loubet, an area in the hills of the hinterland of southern France. This is between Nice and Antibes, a few kilometres from Cagnes, where Vallatton used to spend the winter months.

In the background the castle of Villeneuve-Vence with its white tower can be recognised. Vallotton was an expert at creating asmospheric moods of light and shadow effects. In the twenties, outstanding landscape scenes of the South of France were produced by artists; these can be seen in famous museums or collections. Examples of these are the paintings: 'La fenêtre' (The Window), 1920 -- in the Emil Georg Bührle Collection, Zürich, and 'Vue cavalière de la Cagne' (Cavalier's View of Cagne) (as a deposit of the Gottfried Keller Foundation), 1921 -- in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lausanne, and 'Paysage de Cagne' (Countryside of Cagne), 1921 -- in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Rouen, as well as 'Le Baou' -- 'Vallée de la Cagne' (Le Baou - Valley of Cagne), 1922 in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (see below). This picture is one of the most beautiful and impressive oeuvres of its kind.
