Bror Julius Olsson Nordfeldt (American, 1878-1955) colored woodcut on cream Japan paper, titled "Woman with a fan at the piano". Pencil signed and dated upper left "Nordfelt, No. 21, 1906". Subject is a woman holding a fan by her side, standing by a grand piano with a blue vase of flowers and a potted plant on the floor. Sheet size: 8-1/2" H x 10-5/8" W. Framed: 15-3/4" H x 12" W. Early 20th century. Biography (Courtesy of AskArt): Norfeldt was a painter, etcher, engraver and teacher. Born in Sweden, he immigrated with his family to the U.S. as a child. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1899 and later became an assistant to Albert Herter of New York, helping him paint a mural for the Paris Exhibition. In 1900, Nordfeldt went to France and remained there to study and teach. He attended the AcademiƩ Julian in 1900 as a pupil of Jean Paul Laurens, then went to London to study etching and woodblock cutting as a pupil of Frank M. Fletcher. He moved back and forth between the U.S. and Europe, but after WWI, returned to America. He spent much of his later life Santa Fe and Kansas. Provenance: From the estate of Arthur N. Hosking (American, 1874-1970). Hosking was an illustrator, etcher, and painter who studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and participated in its exhibits. Hosking is known for his illustration of the Christmas classic "Twas the Night Before Christmas".
