(inc. frontis. & one folding), three folding eng. maps at rear, upper margin of title with pencil signature of the Quaker Isaac Braithwaite dated 1843, some dampstaining, browned to leaves g3 & g4, hinges cracked, bookplate/label to upper pastedown removed, orig. cloth gilt, upper joint strengthened at head, 8vo. Ferguson 3558. James Backhouse the first Quaker mission to Australia, where he remained for nine years. He visited every gaol, convict settlement, and chain gang. He was instrumental in introducing many important reforms. (1)
