Description: Athletics. An important group of seven albumen prints showing competitors in action at the AAA Championships, early 1900s, including H.A. Leeke, hammer thrower, winner 173 feet (also Varsity record holder Corpus Christi, Cambridge); Arthur Russell, steeplechase winner in 14 minutes, 20 3/5 seconds); C. Leaky, high jump; P. O'Connor, long jump; A.E. Harrigan, pole jump; J. Kirkwood, shotput, 45 feet 6.5 inches, and an image of the 2-mile walking race showing competitors and spectators within the stadium, plus two images from the Music Hall Sports meeting (440 yards race and a cycle race), two images of the Horsham Dog Show and one image of a coach and four coming in at Ranelagh, all mounted on old album leaves, captioned in ink, all 11 x 15cm. Peter O'Connor (Ireland) was a long-standing world record holder. He won two Olympic medals in 1906 - silver in the long jump, gold in the triple jump and also competed in the high jump. The Music Hall Sports meet was held at Stamford Bridge, opened in 1877 and was home to the London Athletic Club until 1904 when it became a football ground. (9)
