Description: Stratford area, Connecticut, 1765-1775 H. 47 ½ in. Literature: Literature: A nearly identical example is in the Silas Deane House, Wethersfield, Connecticut. Please see Robert F. Trent, "Heart and Crown Chairs", New Haven: New Haven Historical Society, 1977, pl. 17, p. 48. Condition: Retains old worn black paint over green paint. There is a very early repair to left hand scroll attached with early cut nails. Old split to front of crest rail. Replaced rush seat.

James (1912-1999) and Kathryn Abbe shared a passion for photography, each with well-established careers in the profession, as well as a love for art and antiques. They liked the juxtaposition of one object with another and the myriad effects of light. Each had a great eye that came in handy when they worked as a team. James Abbe was a well-known dealer in folk art and other quality Americana for many years and was known for his excellent taste. Kathryn, an identical twin and the author of several wonderful books, has lived a storied life as a photographer.

Condition Report: Retains old (19th century) black paint over green paint. There is a diagonal crack across the crest-rail( see detail photo 2 of crest) The second splat from the right has been replaced, probably in the 19th century. When it broke out, a small section of wood was lost from back side of the horizontal splat-shoe. A small gob of putty was applied to the base of the replacement splat at its juncture to the splat-shoe (see detail photo 4) There is a very early repair to left hand hold. rush seat is a replacement. Please note that although we do not normally note the fact that Feet are original, in this instance- given that early chairs such as this often have ended out ( replaced) feet-- we would like to state that the feet are indeed original. Please see image 6 for detail of front right foot.
