BILIBIN, Ivan (1876-1942) -- Original maquette for Zarya Zhizni. Zhurnal No.1, [The Dawn of Life. Journal No. 1], with original artwork, manuscript poems and short stories. c.1913.
37 pages, 4° (302 x 210mm) and full-page hand-painted covers, title, frontispiece, and 6 further drawings by Ivan Bilibin (signed 'I.B') tipped-in, various sizes, pen, ink and watercolour; 16 drawings by other artists tipped-in, including N. Golopolosov, A. Olisevich, these mostly pen and ink, a watercolour by ?Stachnova, and an unsigned pastel. (Covers soiled, some restoration at spine and edges, a few small repairs.)
WITH ORIGINAL ARTWORK BY BILIBIN. The maquette for an apparently unpublished periodical titled Zarya Zhizni, abandoned or perhaps discouraged by the censor, though Ivan Sitin published a magazine under the name of Zarya, with new content and covers from November 1913 until 1916. This maquette consists of original text and drawings, several of them by the great illustrator Ivan Bilibin, inspired by Russian folk and fairy tales and in his distinctive, individual style. The fine front cover drawing in ink, watercolour, and heightened in gold appears to be based on 'The Tsar and the Firebird'. The text consists of short stories and poems, including some by Perun, and the short story 'Two Enemies'.
