Author: Bidpai
Publisher: Henri Mostert (Leyden)
Printing Year: 1786 First Edition
Condition/Details: Bound in marbled boards, this antique volume is a scarce original edition of the Arabic text of the Hindu Indian Fables of Bidpai (also known as the tales of Kalilah and Dimnah): the portion here published being the chapter of the lion and the ox. These animal fables originated in India but passed into Persia before 570 AD where they were translated first into Pahlavi and then into Arabic. The Indian original, together with the Pahlavi translation were then lost, leaving the Arabic version the only one available to later scholars and translators and the means by which the fables entered western literature. It was translated into many European language and exerted a defining influence on fabulists such as LaFontaine. The full text was not printed until 1816 in the edition of Silvestre de Sacy.
