Initialed and dated "B.C. 1851" l.c. Oil on canvas, 34 x 51 in. (86.3 x 129.5 cm.), framed. CONDITION Good, lined, retouched, craquelure. N.B.: Although several sketches and oils are documented from the 1830's and 1840's, this is one of the earliest full-scale compositions. During the summer of 1851, Champney spent most of his time in the environs of Pinkham Notch. A copy of a letter, which discusses this painting, from Octavia Hughes, accompanies the lot.
