SEWARD PARK (PRESCOTT 1)
300 by 452 mm 11 3/4 by 17 3/4 in
Lithograph printed in colors, 1936, signed in red crayon, from an unspecified edition (Prescott cites six known examples), on Rives paper, with full margins and registration marks intact, in good condition apart from scattered foxing in the margins and on the verso, adhesive stains at the upper sheet edge
NOTE
Provenance: Kennedy Graphics, New York. Purchased 1974.
This lithograph, Shahn's first successful printmaking endeavor, reflects the artist's painting style and is comparable to a later work in tempera titled Sunday Morning. Executed for the federal government's Resettlement Administration, the print depicts unemployed workers assembled on a bench commiserating over their misfortunes during the Great Depression.
