Description:
signed Ben Shahn, l.r. watercolor and gouache on paper Executed in 1954. Shahn's words here are drawn from Martin Luther's comments made in defense of his faith at the Diet of Worms in 1521. Here they take on contemporary meaning for the artist, who was deeply angered by the actions of the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Though Shahn often depicted images from his own Jewish faith, he was not afraid to explore other religious sources to make compelling social commentary.
