ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT OF “JAMES PETHEL.”
Autograph Manuscript Signed (“Max Beerbohm”) and Initialed, 15 pp, legal folio, n.p., n.d. [but c.1919], being the printer’s draft of “James Pethel,” annotated in pencil by Beerbohm with notes for the typesetter, pages moderately thumbed and toned, leaves secured at upper left corner with string, last leaf loose.
The original manuscript to Beerbohm’s short story, “James Pethel,” published in his 1919 collection Seven Men, in which the narrator begins by reading the obituary of Pethel, a wealthy gambler and adventurer famous for his uncommon good luck. In part: “Though seven years have gone by since the day when last I saw him, and though that day was but the morrow of my first meeting with him, I was shocked when I saw in my newspaper this morning the announcement of his sudden death….” Beerbohm adds a note at the upper corner of p 1 to the printer and proof-reader: “Please follow my punctuation, and my division of paragraphs exactly throughout.”
