Notes: En 1793, la Terreur qui régnait en France inquiéta peu à peu Antoine-Jean Gros, trop proche de l'ancienne Cour. Il décida alors de fuir le pays et obtint, par l'intermédiaire de son maître David, un passeport pour se rendre en Italie afin de terminer sa formation. Il passa quelques temps à Gênes, puis à Florence, avant de se rendre à Milan en juillet 1796 pour y accompagner Joséphine Bonaparte qui souhaitait le présenter à son mari. En 1797, Gros fut nommé par Napoléon au sein de la commission chargée de rechercher des objets d'art en Italie et de rassembler ceux que les princes de la péninsule mettaient à la disposition de la France. Au cours de cette période, il voyagea à travers l'Italie du Nord et se fixa ensuite à Milan jusqu'en 1799. Notre dessin a probablement été exécuté lors de ce voyage.

In 1793, the Terror that ruled in France became increasingly disturbing to Antoine-Jean Gros, who was too close to the old Court. He therefore decided to flee the country and obtained, through the mediation of his master David, a passport to travel to Italy to complete his training. He spent some time in Genoa, and then in Florence, before continuing to Milan in July 1796, in the company of Josephine Bonaparte, who wanted to introduce him to her husband. In 1797, Gros was appointed by Napoleon to the commission charged with researching works of art in Italy, and gathering those that the peninsula's princes were handing over to France. During this period, he travelled throughout northern Italy, before establishing himself in Milan until 1799. Our drawing was probably executed during these travels.
