Notes: More than other photographers of his day, Baron de Meyer invested his portraits with a heightened sense of drama through glamorous lighting and poses. The portraits of Olga de Meyer and Mrs. John Jacob Astor offered here are no exception. These prints were almost certainly made for a 1940 exhibition of his work held in the home of actor Edward G. Robinson and his wife. In 1935, De Meyer had destroyed many of his prints and negatives, so that vintage examples of his work were scarce. Unable to locate enough vintage work for the exhibition, new prints such as these were made on large sheets of warm-toned Eastman Kodak paper. The portrait of the Arline Chase was undoubtedly made during de Meyer's tenure as Vogue's first staff photographer, when he set the tone for fashion photography during the 1910s and 1920s.
