Ernst Barlach regards the landscape right in front of his door as his real living room. "He invited his guest there to conduct conversations whenever the weather allowed that. But above all he went into retreat there, under the open sky, for there he felt close to the great mystery of the world which was moving and occupying him." (Translated from W. Tarnowski/Toma Babovic, Auf den Spuren von Ernst Barlach, Hamburg 2005, p. 8) "Der Spaziergänger" (The stroller) in his flowing robe appears to be moved too, thus reflecting the artist's states of mind and experiences.
