Minor splitting along two folds. Canterbury,Conn., 9 July l798 E300-400 At the time, Adams taught at Canterbury; the letter relates interesting details of hiss school and life there. Adams writes that he has found his 'rib' (i.e., his wife, Elizabeth Ripley): ' and if I had known what happiness I should enjoy in the possession of it, I should have made diligent search before 0, Stephen I hope you will soon find employment for Hymen; for a good Wife is a Blessed thing.' Adams (1772-1863), a distant relative of President John Adams, was a classmate of Twining at Yale (1795), and went on to a distinguished someer as an educator, holding various positions in the East and in Illinois, including being Headmaster of Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. This letter dates from his first teaching position.
