[ AUSTRALIAN / ABORIGINAL ART ] QUEENIE MCKENZIE NAKARRA (CIRCA 1930 - 1998) Wooroiwoordi, Hills at Texas Downs, 1995 natural earth pigments with fixative on linen 122 x 232 cm E70000-90000 Provenance: Private Collection, Victoria. Tineriba Fine Arts, Adelaide. Private Collection, Adelaide. Queenie was born on Old Texas Station in 1030 and raised there as a child. Her birthplace is shown on the top left hand side of this painting as pink hills. Blackfella's Creek runs through the centre weaving its way in and out between the hills. The large termite mound that was one of Queenie's significant landmarks is shown in yellow on the left. It was small when Queenie was a child but grew bigger and bigger throughout her life. On the right are the hills of Rosewood Station. Queenie worked as a cook for a short time at Rosewood for the Aboriginal stockmen. Cattle were mustered there and driven across to the abattoirs at Wyndham. Just past this are the hills of Old Texas station, a good place to collect white quartz used for spear heads. This quartz was traded over many parts of the Kimberley. It is shown nestled in amongst many of the hills here. The area is traditionally recognised as a Corella or Echidna Dreaming site Water is shown flowing down the sides of the limestone hills depicted on the top right. The big hills at the bottom of the work are a place Queenie referred to as 'Doogorenyinem'. This painting encapsulates many of the memories and the landscape of Queenie's childhood and adult life
