[ AUSTRALIAN / ABORIGINAL ART ] FREDDY TIMMS (1944 - ) Lake Argyle Triptych, 1996 synthetic polymer paint on canvas 180 x 120 cm (3 panels) E30000-35000 Provenance: Kimberley Art, Melbourne. Catalogue Number KAFT023/96C. Private Collection, VIC. This major triptych, painted in Melbourne in 1996, is a significant work both for its style and subject. It was one of the first Freddy Timms completed in a broader palette than traditional earth colours, clearly marking his desire to be recognised as a contemporary Australian painter rather than just a traditional Aboriginal artist. The subject, Lake Argyle, more poignantly make this point since beneath the surface of the water lies the remnants of the artist's ancestral lands, burial grounds and sacred places. Although this is not a traditional subject it is one of great significance - Freddy and to others of his family and clan. Lake Argyle is an artificial Lake created during the construction of the Ord River Irrigation Scheme. The central panel shows the path across the spillway which regulates the flow of water in - the Ivanhoe River. Prior to the construction of the dam the land beneath the lake was the artist's traditional country through which he walked many times as a boy. According to Freddy, 'no one was consulted about the damming of the Ord, the country was just destroyed along with all our ancestral burial grounds and sacred places'. It is now a most picturesque place with former hills now islands, a 'tourist Mecca', abundant with bird life
