Catalogue Number MB12804. Private Collection, Alice Springs. Barbara Weir was born near Utopia NT in 1945. A child of mixed parentage, she was separated from her family at the age of nine and fostered out to various families, first in Alice Springs, then in Victoria, and Darwin. In the late 1960's she managed to return to Utopia with her six children, to be reunited with the late Emily Kame Kngwarreye who had looked after her as a small child. She began painting in the early 1990's after accompanying a number of Utopia women to Indonesia. Her Dreamings include Bush Berry, Grass Seed, and Wild Flower In her Grass Seed Dreaming series, Barbara fills the picture plane with finely painted reeds of grass that appear to be rhythmically moving as if blown about by a warm breeze. These seeds and grasses, as well as berries, yams, and flowers, are integral to women's ceremonies. Barbara Weir is represented in major private and public collections including the Holmes a Court Collection and the Art Gallery of South Australia
