Note:
Ault, who was born in Cleveland, spent much of his youth in London. He returned to the states in 1911, and like many young artists working in New York, he became influenced by Cubism and later, Surrealism. Categorized as a Precisionist along with artists such as Charles Sheeler and Charles Demuth, Ault created many paintings of rooftops, industrial buildings and New York views. He eventually settled in Woodstock, hoping to free himself from years of depression and alcoholism. Unfortunately, Ault's mental condition deteriorated and he eventually committed suicide.
1927 was a positive period for Ault; he had works in exhibitions at the Whitney Studio Club and a successful one man show at the Downtown Gallery. View from Brooklyn, which is similar to the Newark Museum's Brooklyn Ice House of 1926, is a premier example generated at the time of the artist's high point of Precisionism.
