Attributed to William Michael Harnett (American, 1848-1892), a "Trompe L'Oeil" painting of a United States Five Dollar Bill, Series of 1880, oil on board, 9-1/8" x 12-3/8". Glazed and presented in a period carved giltwood and plaster frame in the neoclassical taste. Note: William Harnett is considered one of the masters of "Trompe L'Oeil" painting. While he was most famous for his still lifes of musical instruments and wild game, Harnett was the first artist to focus solely on the painting of paper currency. His paintings of currency looked so authentic that in 1886 he was arrested for counterfeiting.
