Portrait of a lady, bust-length, with a ribbon in her hair oil on canvas 22 x 18 in. (56 x 45.8 cm.) LITERATURE R. Hoozee, L'Opera completa di Hogarth, Milan, 1967, no. 126 (the engraving). NOTES This picture relates to an engraving by Samuel Ireland entitled 'Diana' and inscribed 'W. Hogarth pinxit. Sam Ireland ft.' which Elizabeth Einberg has suggested represents a sketch for Pharaoh's daughter in Hogarth's Moses brought before Pharaoh's daughter which he painted in 1746 and gave to the Foundling Hospital (E. Einberg, 'Two Hogarth Heads find their bodies at the Foundling Hospital', Enlightened Self interest: The Foundling Hospital and Hogarth, exhibition catalogue, Foundling Museum, 1997, pp.32-4, fig.6 (the engraving)). It appears that the picture has been extensively overpainted. We are grateful to Elizabeth Einberg for her assistance in cataloguing this picture.
