Attributed to Thomas Girtin Abergavenny Bridge, etching with monochrome wash on blue/grey paper, mounted on card support inscribed verso in a contemporary hand View near Abergavenny, 130 x 170mm. (5 1/8 x 6 3/4 in).
Provenance: sold at Christies, October 12th, 1971, as the work of Thomas Girtin (1775-1802). The composition certainly reflects the interest of the burgeoning class of watercolourists such as Girtin and Turner in picturesque sketching tours of such regions. Girtin also produced the soft-ground etched outlines for the plates of his famous series Selection of Twenty of the Most Picturesque Views in Paris, then completed in aquatint by F.C. Lewis and others.
